(Last Minute) DIY Christmas Decor Tree
Written by on Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

I love Christmas and I love DIY crafts, so when I get a chance to mix the two together, I’m all aboard!

I came across this DIY idea from fellow blogger Fabby, over at Leggings and Avacados!

(Who also has a delicious Homemade Hot Cocoa recipe that’s also vegan!)

I loved the simplicity and natural look of this wall decoration. Plus, I thought it would be a great idea for anyone who can’t put up a traditional tree!

What you’ll need:

(If you don’t have time to collect sticks or would rather skip this step you can purchase a premade twig tree for around $8 to $10 click here to go to Target.com)

I purchased everything except the twine & sticks at dollar tree! Including the pine cones. I couldn’t find a bag of pine cones so I bought some floral pieces for $1 that had 3 pine cones attached to each piece!

Of course, you can swap out any ornaments for something in another style to fit your personal preference! I just really liked the overall feel of the original picture I found & it matched my living room theme this year!

Step 1:

(If you purchased a premade hanging twig tree – skip steps 1 & 2)

Layout your sticks from largest on the bottom to smallest at the top. You may have to break a few of your sticks to get the desired look you want.

Step 2:

Start the the bottom right (or left) stick and make a knot with the twine, then move up to the next stick (on the same side you started) and tie another knot. Continue this step until you’ve gotten to the top.

Then continue to make knots on each stick down the other side until finished!

When done, your twig tree should look similar to step 3!

Step 3:

String lights of your preference (I used round ornaments lights from the dollar tree.)

Steps 4, 5 & 6:

Securing the string lights battery pack to the twig tree.

I used a piece of twine to wrap the battery pack around the branches.

Step 7:

Once the battery packs were attached well, I used a snowflake ornament to hide the battery pack out of sight!

I then started adding round ornament balls on the second stick. (I recommend doing this step after all the lights have been strung and secured to your twig tree!)

Steps 8 & 9:

Repeat steps 4 – 7 until you’ve added the desired amount of lights to your tree. I chose to add lights to 3 branches, spacing out the lights with at least 2 branches between each one.

Step 10:

Decorate your twig tree!

I chose the colors of rose gold/light gold and frosted white.

The lights were gold but glow more white/yellow than gold!

Because I had to use 3 strands of lights, each one with a battery pack, I had 3 places that needed covered up. I had bought an owl which I thought I might add to another tree but ending using it to cover the 3rd battery pack.

I also played around with the idea of attached him to the top but I ended up liking him on the side (for now anyways!)

tip: I would suggest finding a tree topper that lit up as I feel the top of my tree could use a little more light.

tip: the more straight across and smoother your branches are, the better your twig tree will lay.

I completed this DIY project in about 30 minutes with an overall cost of about $10!

This tree option could also be a cute idea for a toddler/kid tree they they could decorate themselves.

The hardest part was attaching the battery packs to the twigs.

I also chose to secure the ornaments to the tree by twisting the backs of ornament hooks together instead of just hanging them on the branches.

While searching for pre-made twig tree options, I came across some other cute ideas for decorating that I’ll share below with the links to their respective blogs!
